"Hello, my name is Bill, and I'm a pack rat. Seriously, I own so much stuff that...well gee, any really witty line that I could put here would be an understatement."
This blog was originally created to document my combat against clutter in my home. You know that TLC television show Hoarding: Buried Alive? Well, I've never been a guest on that show, and in fact my blog has been around for longer, but let me just say that they did contact me. Hoarding is a real phenomenon, and thankfully not without a cure. But as you'll see, trying to tell hoarders to "just throw the stuff out" or "just get a bigger place" as a solution is as short-sighted and ignorant as telling an alcoholic to "just stop after one drink".
You'll find photos, related anecdotes, essays on hoarding behavior, essays addressing misconceptions regarding hoarding, and plenty of strange examples of items that had me asking myself "Why the @#%&!! haven't I gotten rid of this yet?!?" The books Clutter's Last Stand and For Packrats Only by Don Aslett were very inspirational in this quest, and you'll see me quote them from time to time. Over the years I certainly made progress, and was able to move out of my old apartment, which I don't think would have been possible had I not started taking action back in 2009 when I started this blog.
I also use this blog for other general blogging stuff like personal rants, music reviews, travel, comedy, the other projects I work on, and so on. Though for the most part, it's all about "my stuff".
The name "A Place for My Stuff" is taken from the title of an album and famous routine by American stand-up comedian George Carlin (1937-2008). I've been a life-long, die-hard George Carlin fan, and that's arguably my all-time favorite comedy album. I also run the site GeorgeCarlin.net.
